August Blog Recap

00:00

Here is this month's blog recap. August was a slow months for me, both in terms of reading and in terms of reviewing books. As an excuse I have to say it was a vacation month for my family, so I replaced my reading and blogging with some sunbathing and leisurely walks in the mountains.

I reviewed 5 books on the blog + 1 on Goodreads (Hopefully, I will add the review to the blog next week).
Click on the image to go to my review.

I continued with my participation in the Teaser Tuesday meme (19, 20, 21 and 22). I also joint another Tuesday feature - Top Ten Tuesday (01 - TTT Favourite Books Set in the Music Scene, 02 - TTT Things That Make Your Life As A Reader/Book Blogger Easier and 03 TTT Most Memorable Secondary Characters). It is great fun trying to come up with the full lists on the given topic. I am enjoying it a lot so far.

This month I also started a new feature - a weekly post with links and brief comments on books I got for free from Amazon. Sometimes I include good books deals that I have come across during the week.

I am happy that I managed to keep up with another monthly feature I have decided to do - Free Books Reviewed. This months I read and reviewed Promises by Marie Sexton. It was my first m/m romance and I really enjoyed it.

I also participated in the release event for Caisey Quinn's Girl on Tour (Kylie Ryans 2). I read the first book last month (my review) and really liked it. There are two giveaways going, so feel free to check them out :)

Best reads:
The best read of the month for me was Sins and Needles by Karina Halle which I just finished and haven't reviewed yet. Second to it comes Louder Than Love by Jessica Topper which was a nice surprise. I will be posting my review of it in the second week of September when the book releases.

Disappointment:
There were not major disappointments for me this month. Iced by Karen Marie Moning (my review on Goodreads) was not as good as the rest of the books in the series but since Dani is not my favourite character, I was not surprised that I did not like her book as much as the rest of the series.

I have substituted my weekly post with new releases with a monthly page. You can find it at the top bar of the blog.

Excerpt:

When he got to the Vitamin Water stage where she was performing, he had to restrain himself to keep from climbing up onto it and wrapping her in his arms. It had been six long and shitty weeks without her. His dick had been keeping track of the minutes. It twitched at the sight of her.

“Hi y’all,” her sweet voice drawled. “Usually the three of us close the show together but Lily had some…family issues to handle and Mia’s helping her out. So I guess you’re stuck with me tonight.”

A few low whistles pierced the air as Trace made his way up front. Danny was up there with her, and she was sitting on a stool. He watched as she nodded at him to signal she was ready. Something was off. He could feel it, could see it. She usually looked like a damned superstar on stage, but tonight she seemed subdued. Sad even. His arms ached to wrap around her. No. They were keeping things as quiet as possible. Keeping the media out of it as much as they could manage. No need to taint his angel with his hellish reputation.

Danny strummed his banjo and Kylie’s clear voice danced into the air. “My daddy used to say, never let ‘em see you sweat. Never let ‘em see you cry. Girl you know better than that.”

Shit. The raw emotion in her voice broke over him. He didn’t even know she’d been working on a song about her dad. Why didn’t he know that? Oh yeah, because they hadn’t seen each other in six damned weeks. For a moment he was back in Macon, watching the pain cross her face as she told him about her daddy. He shook his head and focused on his beautiful girl up on stage.

“My daddy used to say, never look down on a man. You look everyone in the eye, and you always shake hands.” Danny strummed a bit and sped up the tempo. “Cause you ain’t no better and you ain’t no worse. We all end up in the same ol’ hearse.”

He watched as barely restrained ripples of hurt threatened to roll across her face. Jesus. Watching her fight off her own pain stabbed him hard and deep in the chest.

“He said there’d come a time to stand my ground, said there’d be a day when I didn’t back down. Loved to remind me that what goes around always comes around. These are just the things my daddy used to say.”

Danny stopped strumming altogether and Trace could see the moisture shining in her eyes. If he didn’t know better, he’d think there was some in his too.

Deafening silence surrounded him in the seconds before she finished. Her voice was clear and strong when it pierced the air between them. “When we laid him down in the cold hard ground, I knew it was time to walk away. But I’ll never forget…the things my daddy used to say.”

The second the applause hit, he was in motion. She was standing up there, forcing a smile for a bunch of strangers when she was dying inside. To hell with the media. He barely had time to register the look of surprise on her face when he jumped up on the stage and wrapped his arms around her. Her perfect mouth dropped open slightly so he covered it with his. And what began as a gesture of comfort soon turned to one of need. Desperate need. He didn’t care who was watching or how many people had whipped out their damned cell phones to record it.

Goodreads Blurb

Jared Thomas has lived his whole life in the small mountain town of Coda, Colorado. He can't imagine living anywhere else. Unfortunately, the only other gay man in town is twice his age and used to be his teacher, so Jared is resigned to spending his life alone. Until Matt Richards walks into his life, that is. Matt has just been hired by the Coda Police Department, and he and Jared immediately become friends. Matt claims he is straight, but for Jared, having a sexy friend like Matt is way too tempting. Facing Matt's affair with a local woman, his disapproving family, and harassment from Matt's co-workers, Jared fears they'll never find a way to be together-if he can even convince Matt to try.

My Review

Since I got this book for free on Amazon, this review goes to my monthly feature Free Books Reviewed.

This was my first male/male romance and I was hesitant at first but after reading some great praises for it I decided to give it a try. It was a nice love story well told. I liked everything about it - the author's writing style, the general plot, the characters and the happy end.

It has the feel of small town romance - sweet and cute, not realistic but makes you feel good.

The love between Jared and Matt happened slowly and had a a few bumps along the road. On the surface things seems to be more difficult for Matt, and they were to some extend, since he had to admit to himself that he was gay. Yet, their relationship despite being very much desired by Jared, proved to be difficult for him as well. He was open with his sexuality, yet he feared showing it freely in public

Both Jared and Matt were well drawn, complex characters and they went through a whole set of different emotions. I liked how the author presented their lives in their fullness - their friends, family, work were very much present in the story. The focus was not solely on their relationship but also on the ways it affected their lives and the lives of those around them. This gave completeness and fullness to the story.

Sadly, the book employs some general homophobic stereotypes - the military father, the narrow-minded police force. I also felt that the supporting characters, Jared's brother, especially, were underdeveloped and flat. The story would have benefited from a more active role/detailed presentation of Jared and Matt's families.

I enjoyed this book and consider my first attempt in m/m romance a success, so I don't think I will shy away from it in the future :)

Teaser Tuesday 22

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Here are the rules:

• Grab your current read

• Open to a random page

• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• Be careful not the include spoilers!
• Share the title & author so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers.

I have modified them slightly for my Teasers. It will not be two sentences from a random page but two, usually more, sentences from the pages I have read so far that have struck me as most interesting, original or that I just happen to like a lot.

This week I am reading Karina Halle's Sins and Needles (The Artists Trilogy #1). It is a great story - some love, some suspense, some conning and a lot of emotional drama and suffering, all this written with a gripping style.

Just last week Ms Halle released the second book in the series, Shooting Scars and a prequel, On Every Street, was already published in the spring. The final instalment in the series, Bold Tricks, is coming this fall. I strongly recommend this series for all fans of character-driven emotional stories.

"Do you think because you can't see my scars that they don't exist? That's the trouble with pain, Ellie. If you're lucky, you can wear it for all the world to see. Most people have their pain deep inside, in places no one ever goes. Not until it's too late."

Sins and Needles by Karina Halle

Ellie Watt is used to starting over. The daughter of a grifting team, Ellie spent her childhood being used as a pawn in her parents' latest scam. Now she’s much older, wiser and ready to give her con artist life a rest. But returning to the dry desert town of Palm Valley, California means one more temptation than she bargained for – Camden McQueen. Once known as the high school weirdo, Camden is bigger and badder than the boy he used to be and a talented tattoo artist with his own thriving business. Ellie’s counting on Camden still being in love with her but what she’s not counting on is how easily unrequited love can turn into obsession over time. When Camden discovers Ellie’s plan to con him, he makes her a deal she doesn’t dare refuse, but her freedom comes with a price and it’s one that takes both Ellie and Camden down a dangerous road.

I have modified them slightly for my Teasers. It will not be two sentences from a random page but two, usually more, sentences from the pages I have read so far that have struck me as most interesting, original or that I just happen to like a lot.

This week's teaser is from Louder Than Love by Jessica Topper. I just finished the ARC of this book and really liked it. It was a nice surprse - it is not just a hot rock star romance. It's a very emotional story of second chance at love after overcoming loss and redefining oneself.

"...We have already taken several leaps in a short period of time, I thought back to the Plaza and the fountain and the order of things. Should one jump in feetfirst? Headfirst? Or heartfirst?"

Louder Than Love by Jessica Topper (release date: 17 September 2013)

In this powerful debut novel, a young librarian grieves the loss of her husband ... and discovers a love that defies classification.

It's been over three years since a train accident made a widow of Katrina Lewis, sending her and her young daughter Abbey back to the suburban town of her youth ... the only place that still makes sense. Lauder Lake is the perfect place to hide and heal.

Recluse rocker Adrian "Digger" Graves survived the implosion of his music career, but his muse has long lain dormant. Until Kat hires him to play at her library — not on the basis of his hard rock credentials but rather, because of the obscure kids' TV jingle he wrote years ago. In a case of mistaken identity, Adrian stumbles into the lives of Kat and her comically lovable daughter.

Using tattoos as a timeline, Adrian unfurls his life for Kat. But as the courtship intensifies, it's unclear whose past looms larger: the widow's or the rocker's. Will their demons ever rest, or will they break these soul mates apart?

Goodreads Blurb

Nineteen-year-old Cheyenne tries to portray the perfect life to mask the memories of her past. Walking in on her boyfriend with another woman her freshman year in college threatens that picture of perfection.

Twenty-one-year-old Colt never wanted college and never expected to amount to anything, but when his mom's dying wish is for him to get his degree, he has no choice but to pretend it's what he wants too.

Cheyenne needs a fake boyfriend to get back at her ex and Colt needs cash to take care of his mom, so they strike a deal that helps them both. But what if Cheyenne’s past isn’t what she thought? Soon they’re trading one charade for another—losing themselves in each other to forget about their pain. The more they play their game, the more it becomes the only thing they have that feels real.

Both Cheyenne and Colt know life is never easy, but neither of them expect the tragedy that threatens to end their charade and rip them apart forever.

My Review

This is one of those popular stories of pretend-lover-to-real-ones but it was well done and I enjoyed reading it.
At the beginning it seemed like a typical  New Adult - college setting, a heroine proposes to a tattooed bad boy to pretend to be her boyfriend in order to make her ex jealous. It sounded rather naive and clichéd but the author took the story in a completely different direction.

Both, Chey and Colt have their personal dramas connected to their mothers to deal with but despite trying to keep it casual the pretend game they play gradually becomes the only real thing they feel. It is a very touching and emotional story of two young people opening up to and ultimately changing/saving each other.

The story is told from alternating POVs and liked both the voices of Chey and Colt, though I think his was came as stronger, more distinctive.

I was a bit annoyed with how long it took them to accept that what was happening between them was real and not just a game. I felt the author overdid their hesitancy to admit their true feelings and act on them.

I liked the supporting characters a lot - Adrian (who is the hero in the next book in the series) was not described in detail but his presence added a lot to the story, Colt's mom also had a central role, as well as Chey's aunt and uncle. Her ex-boyfriend and his new girl were rather cliched, yet they fitted well in the overall plot.

Now, there a few things that didn't work for me in this book.

First was Chey's background. She is Native-American and I was rather curious about that since I don't often come across ethnic characters in the novels I read. I was really disappointed that this element was not further developed by the author. It was just mentioned as an explanation for exotic beauty and was not further elaborated.

The other thing I was disappointed with was Colt's incident towards the end of the story. Its inclusion in the story was over the top for me, just adding unnecassary drama. It helped highlight Ardrian's character and put further emphasis on Chey's feelings for Colt but the book would have been less melodramatic without it.

Overall, I can recommend this book for all NA fans. It is a great start to a series and things only get better in its sequel, Facade, which tells Adrian's story (my review). The series will continue with a book about Madox whom we meet in Facade, which is to be released in January 2014.

Top Ten Tuesday is weekly meme hosted The Broke and the Bookish. There is a new topic for each week and the participating bloggers are invited to post their Top Ten lists on it. It is a fun feature for lovers of lists and so far I have come across it on many of the book blogs that I follow and often found new books to read through it.

Today I will be joining Top Ten Tuesday for the first time and hope that it will as much fun to participate in it as it is with my other Tuesday meme - Teaser Tuesday.

Today's topic is:
Top Ten Favorite Books With X Setting (ie: futuristic world, set mostly in schools, during World War II, books set in California etc. etc. So many possibilities!)

My Top Ten will feature favourite books set in the music scene/business. I love stories about musicians and some of the best books I have read over the past couple of years feature love and other stories set in the world of music making.

1. Where She Went (If I Stay 2) by Gayle Forman. This is my most favourite book of last year and I have just one word for it - heartbreaking! There is no other book that I have cried over so much. And the song lyrics ..., I could practically hear the songs. I still dream of a real rock/metal band performing them.

2. How to Kill a Rock Star by Tiffanie DeBartolo. It was just amazing and has the best representation of the music business that I have come across in contemporary fiction. It also includes some killer song lyrics.

3. Harmonic Feedback by Tara Kelly. A girl with "a touch of Asperger's" expresses herself through music, It is a great YA novel with very realistic and compassionate representation of mental illness.

4. In the Band (Luminescent Juliet 1) by Jean Haus. It is a nice YA/NA love story about a girl drummer and the lead guitarist.

5. Five Flavors of Dumb by Antony John. It is Ya novel about a deaf girl managing the school's rock band. It is a touching coming of age story infused with music despite the heroine being deaf.

6. Thomas and January (Sleepless 2) by Fisher Amelie. This is a emotional love story between ex-musician turned talent scout and a young classical musician who left University to become a talent scout.

7. A Little Wanting Song by Cath Crowley. A nice YA story of growing up filled with song making and playing the guitar.

8. Thoughtless (Thoughtless 1). Meet the ultimate rock god - Kellan Kyle and the worst cheating heroine, Kiera. This book is worth reading for the hotness of Kellan alone :)))

9. Girl with Guitar (Kylie Rayns 1) by Caisey Quinn. A story about a young girl trying to make it into the country music scene.

10. Louder Than Love by Jessica Topper. I am still reading this one but I enjoy it so far. A former British metal musician and a young widowed librarian - an unlikely combination.

This is a special Tuesday for me. It is my 20th Teaser Tuesday post and I have to say that participating in this bookish meme has been great fun so far.

Today I will be joining in another meme - Top Ten Tuesday and you can check my blog later on for the post on it.

My teaser is from a book which I finished last week but I liked it a lot and couldn't miss the chance to highlight it with a little teaser. The book is The Chocolate Touch by Laura Florand. It is the fourth book in her Amour et Chocolat series and I haven't read the previous ones yet but I really enjoyed this one. If you are a fan of Paris, chocolate (who isn't?!) and sweet romance between great character, this is the book for you. Here is my excerpt:

"He could only stare. Sha had just told him he was the sun to her, and she thought he didn't get anything out of it?
What the hell was he doing wrong? Hadn't she even noticed he gooey melted marshmallow of him all over her hands? Did he need to be bringing her flowers or something? Presents? Should he be getting jewelry?"

 La Vie en Chocolat

Dominique Richard's reputation says it all--wild past, wilder flavors, black leather and smoldering heat. Jaime Corey is hardly the first woman to be drawn to all that dark, delicious danger. Sitting in Dom's opulent chocolaterie in Paris day after day, she lets his decadent creations restore her weary body and spirit, understanding that the man himself is entirely beyond her grasp.

Until he touches her. . .
Chocolate, Dominique understands--from the biting tang of lime-caramel to the most complex infusions of jasmine, lemon-thyme, and cayenne. But this shy, freckled American who sits alone in his salon, quietly sampling his exquisite confections as if she can't get enough of them--enough of him--is something else. She has secrets too, he can tell. Of course if she really knew him, she would run.

Yet once you have spotted your heart's true craving, simply looking is no longer enough...

My Freebies This Week #2

Here we go with the second weekly post on the books I picked for free this week from Amazon:

Blackbird (Sometimes Never novella) by Cheryl McIntyre. I picked this one since I already have Sometimes Never, although I have gotten to reading it yet - Amazon

More Than One Night by Marie Tuhart. I just liked the blurb on AMZ and the reviews are not too bad - Amazon (This one is no longer free, unfortunately.)

A Week for Love to Bloom (Soul Mates 101 #1) by Scarlet Wolfe. This sounds good - Amazon

Broken Hart (The Hart Family #1) by Ella Fox. This is the first book in a series about the Hart Family. Five more books have been published already and decided to give it a try by starting with this freebie. - Amazon

At the end here is a great book deal I came across this week:

Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone #1) by Laini Taylor. It has great reviews by all my GR friends and is often compared to Karen Marie Moning Fever series which is an absolute favourite of mine, so I couldn't pass this deal to get it for 1.99 - Amazon
