Synopsis

There are three things you should know about Quinn Sullivan: 1) He is madly in love with Janie Morris, 2) He’s not above playing dirty to get what (or who) he wants, and 3) He doesn’t know how to knit.

After just five months of dating Janie, Quinn—former Wendell and unapologetic autocrat—is ready to propose marriage. In fact, he’s more than ready. If it were up to Quinn, he would efficiently propose, marry, and beget Janie with child all in the same day—thereby avoiding the drama and angst that accompanies the four stages of pre-matrimony: engagement, meeting the parents, bachelor/bachelorette party, and overblown, superfluous wedding day traditions. But Janie, much to Quinn’s dismay, tosses a wrench in his efficacious endeavors and challenges him to prove his devotion by going through the matrimonial motions, no matter how minute and mundane.

Will Quinn last until the wedding day? Or will he yield to his tyrant impulses?

Regardless, one thing is for certain, Quinn Sullivan will have to learn to expect the Spanish Inquisition (i.e. the unexpected) if he plans to have and keep Janie Morris as his wife.

Author's note: This book is not a standalone. It is the sequel to ‘Neanderthal Seeks Human,’ it is book #1.5 in the ‘Knitting in the City’ series, and it is a full length, 100k word novel.

Again, you must read ‘Neanderthal Seeks Human’ first before reading this book.

This book is written in first person, alternating POV (Janie Morris AND Quinn Sullivan; but more Janie than Quinn).

About Penny Reid
Author-Photo-Penny-Reid-300x300
SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.

My Review

When I learned that we'll be getting more of Janie and Quinn, I was over the Moon with excitement. I thought it would be a short novella on their wedding but Penny surprised me (in the best possible way) by writing a funny and serious full-length novel about about their journey to altar.

Janie is the same funny, quirky, adorable self that we all know and love from book 1. What I liked the most here is that we got to see more of Quinn's POV. And he is one naughty bad/good boy hiding his turbulent emotions behind a mask of icy indifference. I loved everything about him in this book. What we got in him is a real-life vigilante, present-day Robin Hood - seeking justice and taking from the rich and corrupted and giving to the poor and underprivileged. He is as good as it gets and even though I generally don't like romance about billionaires - I find them too far-fetched and unrealistic, I did enjoy Quinn and Janie's love story. There is complexity to both characters and Quinn is so much more than a hot-shot security power player. There is vulnerability in him when he is in love, there is true friendship (Dan) and loyalty (his sister), forgiveness and generosity which make him all too human, approachable and oh, so easy to love :)

The first 1/3 of the book was rather slow - nothing much happened but then things picked up pace around the middle of the book - the Knitting club ladies came in full swing. Add to the mix - Quinn's family, Janie's father and her sister Jem, some crazy shenanigans in Vegas and what you get is great fun. I especially liked how the story seemed light and fluffy yet it focused on some serious issues about marriage, being together, also about guilt, forgiveness, accepting the other as he/she is with all the imperfections and peculiraities.

We get to see a lot more of Dan here and this makes me all very excited about his and Kat's book. Jem also had an intersting role here - we see a new side to her characters, and maybe there still hope for her. Quinn's sister was an isnterresting character as well, though I felt let down by her actions in teh end of the book.

In short, I highly recommend this to all fans of romance with a a twist. It's funny and sweet, it has the craziness and all the beauty surrounding a wedding presented in an outrageously funny and engaging writing style of Ms Reid.

June Blog Recap

13:48

I'm in full summer mood now, which just means I'm getting lazy and slacking with my post. So, here is the June Blog Recap. It's a later than usual but you can still check it out in case you have missed something on the blog the past month.

Best read: I went on a reading marathon of Psy-changeling series by Nalini Singh and loved all the five final books in the series I read this month. Next best thing, in a completely different genre - romantic comedy - was Neanderthal Marries Human by Penny Reid (review to come on July 7) and Complicated Creatures by Alexi Lawless (a debut romantic suspense which was a pleasant surprise)

Biggest Disappointment: It was a good month for reading, no real disappointment this month.

Teaser Tuesday:
Fall From India Place (On Dublin Street #4) - Samantha Young
Release Day Launch for Neanderthal Marries Human by Penny Reid

I will be making some changes in the blog soon. I won't be posting new releases every month, instead I'll make a page with all the upcoming releases I'm eagerly expecting. I will be adding new titles as I come across them, so check the page often, if you want to keep track of all new books.

I'm also working on a Recommended Reads page where I will list all my favourite books. I'm still on organizing the list but I'll publish it soon and I will keep working on it in the meantime.

Excerpt

Chapter 1 - Part 1

Cook’s Bay, Moorea, Polynesian Islands

August 4, 2013

For a man of few words Brody Baxter hated silence.

Watching the waves crash on the beach, he wished his brother were there. Sean’s chatter would make him focus.

At this point, the third hour in a four-hour shift with nothing but moonlight and dolphins in the ocean in front of the villa, Brody prayed for a three-man paramilitary attack from the water but would settle for camera-wielding paparazzi jumping out from the Tiare bush to his left.

Anything to break up the monotony.

Funny, but at one time he’d thought guarding shady politicians would be more exciting than guarding the earnest ones, but the years had taught him otherwise.

The screen door behind him slid open with a gasp and a swish. The short hair on his neck prickled in warning, but he didn’t turn around. It was the woman Senator Rawlings had brought. Gina Bassili. The smell of sweat over perfume preceded her.

“Sorry,” Gina said, her voice gaspy and rough. “I forgot you were out here.”

That’s the idea, he thought, and stepped farther into the shadows of the balcony.

Perhaps knowing he was out here, she’d have second thoughts about enjoying the view from the balcony.

But no, the woman came to lean against the railing overlooking the bay. Her robe, barely tied at her waist, looked like a dark oil spill over her body. The color blended with her hair. The night sky behind her.

Quickly, he glanced away. She’d been loud in that villa. Lots of Oh, Daddy s.

“Is all this really necessary?” she asked, waving her hand around to indicate him and the other members of the team, silently guarding the senator and, by proximity, her. Her accent was nearly non-existent, but the alleys of Cairo clung to her vowels.

She’d come into the senator’s life suddenly. A friend of a friend of an aide at some political fundraiser in D.C. Brody didn’t particularly like how much they didn’t know about her.

Choosing not to answer, Brody scanned the edge of the cliff to his left. If Brody was lucky, Senator Rawlings’ wife would come rappelling over the edge with a submachine gun and he wouldn’t have to engage in this conversation.

There were days he really missed the Marine Corps.

Out of the corner of his eye he saw her run her fingers over the silk edge of her robe, revealing her collarbone, the gravity-defying inside curve of her breast.

“Maybe Doug sent himself the death threats, just so he could take me someplace.”

Doubtful. Brody’s team didn’t come cheap. And Cook’s Bay was a lot of effort for a woman who probably would have put on the very same show at Four Seasons in Washington, D.C.

“Does it bother you? Listening to us?” She tipped her head, her dark hair falling down her neck. “Knowing he has a wife. A family. That he’s cheating? Lying?” Her eyes glowed with a certain avarice. Obviously, it turned her on. The dirty illicitness of it. Of her role in it. It explained why she was putting on a show for a man twice her age, three times her weight, and with the morality of a shark.

For a moment he thought about telling her she was the cleanest thing in Senator Rawlings’ life. That the death threats could have come from the full spectrum of extremist groups, the product of a lifetime of double dealing and lying in the name of politics.

But, lately, Rawlings was pissing off the Yetarzikstan Ba’ath party, with vocal support of the rebels. All of this he didn’t bother explaining to her, because he doubted she cared. Instead, he looked back over the ocean. The dolphins, the moonlight. Bother him? As a rule, Brody didn’t get bothered.

“Gina?” The senator yelled from inside the door.

She shrugged, her lips twisted in coy regret.

“Duty calls,” she whispered and vanished back into the villa.

Goodreads Blurb

Step right up and meet Jay Fields: Illusionist. Mentalist. Trickster.

I think in triangles. You think in straight lines.

I show you a table and make you believe it’s a chair.

Smoke and mirrors, sleight of hand, misdirection. I trick and deceive.

But most of all, I put on a good show.

The world thinks I killed a man, but I didn’t. Bear with me. It’s all a part of the plan.

Revenge is what I want. I want it for me and I want it for her.
I want it for all six of us.

She doesn’t remember me, but she’s the reason for everything. She’ll be my prize at the end of all this – if I can hold onto my willpower, that is. Maybe I’ll slip up a little, have a taste, just a small one.

So go ahead and pick a card. Come inside and see the show. Look at my hands, look so closely that you can’t see what’s happening while you’re so focused on looking. I’ll be destroying your world from right here in the spotlight.

You’ll never see me coming until it’s too late.

I’ve only got one heart, and after I’ve pulled off my grand deception I’ll hand it right to her.

So, sit back, relax, and let my girl tell you our story. You’re in for one hell of a ride.

When famed illusionist Jay Fields walks into her father’s law practice, Matilda Brandon has a hard time keeping her heart from pounding. With a non-existent love life, she wonders if she could ever have a chance with a man this sexy and charismatic. She knows she’ll never meet someone like him on her online dating site, that’s for sure.

Jay wants to sue a newspaper, however, he leaves with a new landlord and a rather smitten housemate instead. As the two form a bond, Matilda finds herself becoming a part of Jay’s crazy world of illusion and mentalism, where underground magic shows, casino gambling and secret vendettas abound.

Jay has a dark history, and Matilda isn’t sure if she should open herself up to such an enigma of a man. Is he really who he claims to be? And why does he keep so many secrets?

She doesn’t know it yet, but they share a common past. Jay has set a plan in motion and whether she likes it or not, claiming her heart has always been his ultimate goal.

Why am I waiting on this? - To say that I'm intrigued by the blurb would be an understatement. It seems to be a different, unique story and since I've already read and enjoyed a lot Ms Cosway previous book, Still Life with Strings, I'm just can't wait to get my hands on this one.
