Synopsis

In the Company of Shadows is a series about two people who are thrown together as partners in a secret agency; their mission is to disband rebels who have propagated in a post-war future, but they have to deal with everything that comes with an unlikely partnership as well.

Miscommunication, periods of distance, fleeting smiles and learning to trust someone when a person can't even trust himself, these are what they struggle with while still trying to do their jobs. One is a psychopath, called a murderer and monster and generally deemed subhuman by nearly everyone who knows of him; the other is an introvert, cold and emotionless and so lost in thoughts that he would agree that he can be called a monster of inhumanity. But what makes a person human; is it humanity, compassion, or is it simply the ability to reason? Can a monster be human, and general humanity breed monsters?

While they learn about each other, they learn about themselves; where their loyalty and morality lies, and how learning to trust another person can be incredibly difficult, bittersweet, and rewarding all at the same time. Join Hsin Liu Vega (aka "Sin") and Boyd Beaulieu as they struggle to find where they fit in a world slowly recovering from war.

Mini Review

This is the unedited version, so it's much longer and wordy than book 1. It took me some time to read it but I really enjoyed it.

I found it a bit slow, especially at the beginning. I found it too introspective and the inability of Boyd and Sin to really talk to each other, though understandable given their background and current situaiton, was really frustrating.

Boyd and Sin go through a lot here; though they are separated most of the time and their relationship hits an all-time low here. I  feel so much for Sin that I'm ready to accept/excuse his behaviour no matter how inappropriate it was. Boyd, on the other hand, made some spectacular msitakes. I realize he meant well and he needed to take care of himself, but his actions did make me so angry and sad. I 'm struggling with myself to forgive him.

I love how emotionally invested I'm in everyone we meet in this series. The authors introduce a lot of new characters in this installment and they have quickly warmed their way into my heart as well (Kassian, especially but also Cade and Emma and the rest of their group). We see some old secondary characters in a new light - Ryan, Ann, Carhart and I particularly appreciate how multilayered the both the plot and characters are becoming.

Ais and Santino make a perfect blend of compicated relationships, interesting plot full of unexpected turns and lots of action and heartbreaking moments of honesty and intimacy. It feels like a truly epic story, painfully real despite the dystopian setting.

Dystopia

Review: Evenfall Vol. 1 and 2 by Santino and Ais

01:21

This review is of Evenfall: Vol. 1 and 2 Director's Cut  in the LGBT series In the Company of Shadows by Santino Hassell and Ais. It's a dystopian thriller involving secret organizations, assassins and a tender love story. The whole series is self-edited and self-published and it's available for free at http://www.inthecompanyofshadows.com/

I had a friend recommend this book to me more than a year ago but I was intimidated by the size - 4 books with more than 1000 pages each and I felt I jusct couldn't make that committment at the time. As th year went on more and more of my friends read and loved this series. At the end of 2014 I made a promise to myself to start the new year with it and  here I am in the middle of January already done with book 1.

This is more of suspense and action-packed thriller than a romance. There is great world building, enganing story, memorable characters, what more can a reader want.

Synopsis

In a post-apocalyptic future, the Agency works behind the scenes to take down opposition groups that threaten the current government. Their goals justify all means, even when it comes to their own agents.

Sin is the Agency's most efficient killer. His fighting skills and talent at assassination have led to him being described as a living weapon. However, he is also known to go off on unauthorized killing sprees, and his assigned partners have all wound up dead.

Boyd is not afraid to die. When his mother, a high-ranking Agency official, volunteers him to be Sin's newest partner, he does not refuse. In fact, his life has been such an endless cycle of apathy and despair that he'd welcome death.

In the newly revised Director's Cut of Evenfall, the first volume follows these two cast-offs as they go from strangers to partners who can only rely on each other while avoiding death, imprisonment, and dehumanization by the Agency that employs them.

Review

Vol. 1 started slow with a lot of descriptions and the introduction of many characters. They were necessary to set the stage but I found them overwhelming at times. On the other hand, I did enjoy the slow development of the relationship between the main characters, Boyd and Hsin.

In terms of plot and even romantically, things picked up around the middle and the ending was the perfect cliffhanger.

The story flowed very smoothly and had me captivated from the start. We got to know the characters in real time, just as they were getting to know each other. It felt natural and realstic if that is a suitable description for a dystopian novel.

The intensity of the realtionship between Boyd and Hsin was beautifully done. They start off as strangers, both of them resigned to their fate and pretty much dead inside and gradually became true partners and friends and ultimately lovers.

It's a pleasure to read the transition in Boyd and Hsin. In the beginning Boyd is lost and desperate, there is no spark or desire to live left in him. He makes more than one mistake but they only make him human and more real. Hsin's transformation was even more amazing. I just felt so much for him. It was not a magical change happening overnight, love/sex didn't cure him. It was a slow process, painful and often misguided, yet it was Boyd's acceptance of Hsin as a human being that ultimately made Hsin see himself as human as well. Their relationship explored a lot of issues, such as self-image, vulnerability, strenght and (self)conrtol.

The romantic aspect of their relationship took center stage in the first half of Vol. 2. It was intense, and passionate and raw and tender and beautiful. This was a time of first for Hsin and I loved they were presented as unique and unfamiliar experiences for him, yet they reflected his experience in life so far. It was a re-awakening for Boyd who had loved and lost before.

The world building kept expanding, there was lots of action and the plot twists kept me on the edge.

I loved the complexity in both plot and character development and how they balance each other out. The romance is never completely lost even in the roughest times of battle and it never overtakes completely the military aspect of the story.

There are so many supporting characters I met in the series so far and I'm curious to learn more about them. Off to the next book in the series, Interludes.

Recommended read for fans of complex military stories with unexpected twists and turn and hot romance.

Book Blogging #2: How to Get Review Copies of Books (ARCs)

00:34

I started this new feature on my blog with advise on books and blogging with my post on How to Get Free Books last week.

Today I want to tell you more about the services of NetGalley and Edelweiss as a way to get free books in exchange of reviewing them online.

I have been using NetGalley for over a year now and I’m very happy with it. It’s very easy to use. Basically you register there and request the books you want to read. I after you’ve read them you have to provide feedback and it’s desirable to publish your review on your site/blog, Goodreads or other platforms for readers and on booksellers sites (Amazon, B&N, ect.).

Now, the tricky part is the approval of your requests. Initially, I was often declined, since my blog was new, I didn’t have many reviews posted there or elsewhere. As a good way to start, I’d suggest that you check out the Read Now section which lists books free for download. It’s important to provide feedback on the books received regularly, even if you didn’t like the book. I, personally, try to maintain my request/review ratio around 60%, though it’s better to be keep it higher than that.

People often go overboard with requests because initially they don’t get many approvals and then suddenly they get far too many review copies to be able to go through them.

The publishers providing copies of their titles for review have different criteria for approving reviewers. Some don’t approve request outside US at all, the UK publishers also provide titles only to UK-based bloggers.

Edelweiss offers the same service but I have more difficulties with it. As an international reader based in Bulgaria, I can't really use the search option. The only way for me to see the titles available for review is through the email they sent me every week.

This site works in a slightly different way than NetGalley. You have to register with the site and provide some general information about you/your blog but when you request a specific book, you also write a short note explaining why you want this particular title. I get the feeling that Edelweiss offers more YA titles, while NetGalley gets more adult and romance titles but this is pure speculation on my part based on personal observations.

So far, Edelweiss is not working very well for me and I get more rejections than approvals there and very often I don’t get any response. Still, I check regularly the title offered for review and place my requests when I see something that I like.

Here is some useful tips for you on how to request ARCs:

-          Start with Read now books (there such sections both on Netgalley and on Edelweiss)
-          Don’t be shy when requesting, you never know when you will be approved, at the same time
-       Go only for books you really want to read, otherwise you will loose the desire to review them
-          Provide honest feedback regularly
-          Don’t depsair if you get declined often.
-          Sing up for the site’s newsletter, it’s a great way to learn for a limited-time only read now books

Lately, I’ve noticed that some of the companies organizing book tours and promotional events also offer copies of books for review.

-          InkSlinger PR
-          Xpresso BookTours
-          AToMR Book Blog Tours
-     IndieSage

Note: I will be writing a seprate post on PR companies prganising book tours, blitzes, etc. soon (I hope)

Now, if you are a blogger, it’s good to have a section on the blog with your Review requirements/criteria. In this way authors can send you copies of their books for review. I’m swamped with books to review at the moment and I recently went back to work fulltime, so I’m not accepting review requests. I did make an exception recently, since the blurb of the proposed book intrigued me and it ended being a wonderful surprise (Complicated Creatures by Alexi Lawless).

That's pretty much all I have gained as personal experience in requesting and reviewing ARCs. Feel free to ask any questions you might have and I'll try to answer them to the best of my abilities and knowledge. Your own thoughts and tips on requesting and reviewing ARCs are most welcome!

Book Blogging: How to Get Free Books

00:00

Recently a friend of mine from university reached out to me on GR and she thanked me for my reviews which she found very helpful for someone like her who is new to GR and doesn't have much time to search for new titles. I was overwhelmed and I remember my first steps in actively reviewing books 2 years ago - how I struggled with GR initially, what it took me to understand the workings of NetGalley, Edelweiss, other book blogs. As usually, I was acting stubborn and didn't ask for help and tried to figure it all out by myself.

For an international reader like me, it is even more difficult to find your place in the book blogging/reading (online) world. So, to cut a long story short, I decided that I could share some of my insights with the hope that could be helpful for some new readers out there. I know there are a lot of resources already available but still, I will add my two cents to this topic. I will try to make it a series of short article/posts with advice directed mostly to new readers/reviewers. Feel free to add your comments and suggestions any time.

My first post will focus on the ways we can get free book (either just to read, or to read and review).

How to Get Free Books

Most of us are hard pressed for money and as a compulsive reader my budget for books regularly goes overboard. So, I'm always on the lookout for great deals and sources of free books.

- Many of the Goodreads groups have topics for books sales and freebies. Find the groups which reflect your reading interests and then search for the right topic and subscribe to it. This source works bets for me.

- There is a number of sites offering daily newesletters with book sales and freebies. I'd suggest that you try out different newsletter to see which one works bets for you. Many deals repeat along the site but there are also some appearing on one place only. I have cut down the newsletters I receive to just two, since I don't really have the time to go through too many daily emails - SweetFeedBooks and BookBub

- Check the bestsellers list (free books) on Amazon - I don't do this very regularly, but you can find some awesome jems there sometimes.

- Another way to get free books even before their official release is provided by sites like NetGalley and Edelweiss - where you can request books for review. You need to provide feedback on the books you've read and there is always a chance that your request may be denied. I'll be introducing this services in more detail in my next post

- You can also get books in exchange of review in several groups on Goodreads. This is a great way to read new books for free if you are willing to try new authors, especially ones that publish their works independantly (indies) - Making Connections, New Adult Book Club

Other free reads (short stories, deleted chapters, prequels, epilogues, etc.)

- Most author publsih some free stuff on their sites or send it in their newsletters. I strongly recommend following your favourite authros on your preferred social meadi. My expreience with newsletters so far has been only positive. Penny Reid sends great newsletters and Nalini Singh offers a wealth of free short stories both ion her site and via newsletter.

- There are sites like Wattpad and SwoonReads - they offer a platform for aspiring and establih authros to share some of their works with readers for free.

These are the ways I use to get (free) books to read and review. If you other suggestion, feel free and welcomes to share them.

Until he meets Kit.

Logan doesn’t know everything about Kit. Kit doesn’t know anything about herself, until she has to sacrifice all she ever wanted to save what’s most important to him.

Review

This book features a hero which disability (he can't hear and hasn't spoken for 8 years), and I'm always curious about such stories. Furthermore, the book was free on Amazon, so I decided to give it a try.

I expected more focus on hero's disability and how he copes with life and love despite it, but what I got is a nice, albeit fairly typical NA romantic story.

I enjoyed the writing and all the characters were quite likable as well. Still, I felt the story lacked depth. Early on we learn that the heroine, Kit (Emily) also has learning issues - she is dyslexic and it's a big impediment for her. It seems a bit unrealistic to me how her parents being, so rich and successful, just thought she was stupid and didn't really help her deal better with her learning disability.

The hero, Logan, was just swoony - a tortured and sexy tattoo artist. He is deaf but he is not speaking by his own choice. Soon after he meets Kit, though, he opens up to her and starts talking but only to her. Part of the reason was how difficult it was for her to read his notes, yet he kept his silence around everybody else, including his four brothers and it didn't feel right to me. They all had learned sign language for him, yet he didn't make the slightest effort to talk with them.

The story follows the romance between Logan and Kit while the disabilities of the characters were played down. This said, I really enjoyed the interaction between them, how they communicated with one another. Logan's brothers were great supporting characters. Their own stories and their active role in Logan and Kit's lives added richness to the story.

Matt's illness and the decision of Kit to help him was admirable and an act only a strong, compassion person could do. It set in motion the events leading to the resolution of the main conflict in the story.

The ending was a bit rushed and the conflict between Kit and her parents was far too easily resolved. The book has a happy end, though the story of Logan and Kit continues in the next book of the series, Smart, Sexy and Secretive.

Overall, it's a nice, NA romance - with some angst, some sexy times and a generally feel-good vibe.

Mini Review: First Ink by Laura Wright

Author: Laura Wright
Date of publication: 17 Dec 2013
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Novella

This book is currently free on Amazon.

Synopsis

Rush
Women in his bed, celebs and rockers in his chair and a killer bank account at his disposal, life is pretty freaking swell. Then she walks back into it again. With her mismatched eyes, perfect pink mouth and a laugh that still haunts him, she gave him nothing but marvelous misery. Now she wants his hands on her again. Not for pleasure, but for pain. For Ink. A bleeding heart to match the one she left him with five years ago.

Addison
She can’t forget him. No matter how hard she’s tried. The pain she caused him in the past eats at her daily, and she can’t move on with her life. But she has a plan, a hope for redemption – a way for him to take his revenge out on her flesh. But it’ll only work if he lets her inside his exclusive world, under his famous artist’s needle and into his bed—and heart-once again.

Mini Review

The story is told form dual POV and it's all about getting back together after a break-up. I liked a lot of things about it - the heroine, Addison, who has made a mistake but has come to realize it and is doing her best to remedy it. You have to respect her for strength and determination to fight for her love. The hero, Rush, is deeply wounded, unwilling to forgive but unable to resist the physical attraction. I liked them both, him especially - his struggle with himself, his resistance to risk his heart again with the girl who had hurt him so much.

It's a light steamy read but I'd have liked there to be more substance to the story. There is a lot of potential but not enough depth. I wanted to know more about the characters, the things from their past were just hinted upon and it would have been nice if they were further developed. We see Rush's life in the present - he is a successful tattoo artist in Las Vegas but don't learn much about Addison besides the fact that she is a college student somewhere. Despite the happy end, I feel that there are too many things about them as a couple which are left unresolved.

Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend me it anyone who is looking for a quick, light and very, very sexy read.

The second book, Shattered Ink, which continues Rush and Addison's story, is just a novella and it is currently available for 0.99$.

Mini Review: Bodies in Space by shukyou

Title: Bodies in Space
Date of Publication: 25 June 2012
Genre: Romance, M-m, Novelette

My rating: 4 Stars

Goodreads Blurb

Isaac didn't make mistakes. He was a very thorough and hard worker, and had been praised for that by his supervisor on so many occasions that he'd lost count, and something had to happen very many times before Isaac lost count of it. Words: 21382

My Mini Review

It's a tender love story between two young men, one of whom is in the autistic spectrum and it's told entirely form his POV. It's very moving without being too sentimental. The story gives us an insight into the mind of a person with autism and how he sees the world around him and his attempts to find his place and live a full life.

The main hero's (Issac) voice is captivating and powerful with its simplicity and naivete. Issac sees the world in black and white. His sincerity about his feelings and total lack of pretense made this beautiful love story feel very real.

There is no glossing over of the real-life issue both Issac and Rick face but their difficulties are not overdone either. The story offers a perfect balance between romance and realism. In its succinct form (short story/novelette) it shows that everybody needs love and can give love in return.

Goodreads Blurb

A chance encounter in the dark leads eighteen-year-old Daniel and the girl who stumbles across him to profess their love for each other. But this love comes with conditions: they agree it will only last one hour and it will only be make-believe.

When their hour is up and the girl rushes off like Cinderella, Daniel tries to convince himself that what happened between them only seemed perfect because they were pretending it was perfect. Moments like that with girls like her don’t happen outside of fairytales.

One year and one bad relationship later, his disbelief in insta-love is stripped away the day he meets Six: a girl with a strange name and an even stranger personality. Daniel soon realizes the way he pretended to feel about Cinderella and the way he really feels about Six may not be so different after all. Especially when the two loves of his life end up being one in the same.

Unfortunately for Daniel, finding Cinderella doesn’t guarantee their happily ever after…it only further threatens it.

My Review

This is a spin-off novel of the Hopeless series and it is available for free on the major bookseller sites. It tells the story of Holder's friend Daniel and Sky's friend Six.

I think the presence of Daniel was one of the good things in Losing Hope which I found overall disappointing (my review). We met Six in the first book of the series, Hopeless, and I can't say I was much of a fan of hers.

Daniel provided a very much needed comic relief from all the tragedy and drama in Losing Hope. I liked his quirky sense of humor and his loyalty to Holder at his worst moments. I was naturally curious to read more about him, even though it was pretty obvious who his Cinderella was back when he first told this story.

I liked the easy flirting between Daniel and Six, it was fun and felt natural. Their relationship happened way too fast and it had the feel of some cosmic I-can't-breathe-without-you kind of love, still I enjoyed it a lot. It was over the top but cute and heart-warming in a way.

Daniel was still the same funny, care-free guy from Losing Hope and I still liked him a lot. Six was completely different, though. Something happened to her in Italy that took her from the girl who didn't do relationships and boyfriends to someone who was ashamed of her previous frivolous behaviour and was trying to hard to make amends for it.

I was enjoying the story up until a plot twist was thrown in about 80%. I didn't see it coming and it totally ruined the book for me. It is a big spoiler so I am not divulging it here but you don't mind spoilers, you can read my review on Goodreads where I will include it in spoiler tags.

It is a very serious issue and it didn't fit with the light, casual tone of the story. It changed the whole situation for the main characters and I felt its importance was played down. On a personal level I am not comfortable at all with the way the whole issue was resolved.

What was a sweet, albeit a bit sappy story of high-school love turned into a mess of mixed messages. An important issue was introduced in the story but it was poorly treated and just swept under the rug en route the the Happily Ever After for the Daniel and Six.

Note: These were the correct prices/free books at the time of the publication of this post. Please, check them again before buying. I am only posting deals valid for international users, since I based in Bulgaria and very often some sales or free books on Amazon US are only available to US residents.

Follow me on Facebook to keep up to date with the latest freebies and sales I come across. Often they last only a short time and by the time a draft my post on Friday, many of them are no longer available.

Here are the books I got for free this week:

Against the Wall (Against the Wall 1) by Julie Prestsater - friends-to-lovers story about high school teachers - sounds like fun read to me - Amazon

Wild Irish Ride (Weldon 1) by Jennifer Saints - second-chance love with a touch of suspense - Amazon

Shocking Heaven (Room 103 1) by D. H. Sidebottom - a rockstar romance, I just can't resist them :) - Amazon

The Texas Millionaire's Runaway Wife by Mary Malcolm - I am not a big fan of stories about millionaires but the blurb of this one really intrigued me - Amazon

In the Moment by Olivia Jake - older hero and heroine romance, it is a rare find and this one is just released and sounds interesting - Amazon
