When Maze returns to Wildstone for the wedding of her estranged bff and the sister of her heart, it’s also a reunion of a once ragtag team of teenagers who had only each other until a tragedy tore them apart and scattered them wide.

Now as adults together again in the lake house, there are secrets and resentments mixed up in all the amazing childhood memories. Unexpectedly, they instantly fall back into their roles: Maze their reckless leader, Cat the den mother, Heather the beloved baby sister, and Walker, a man of mystery.

Life has changed all four of them in immeasurable ways. Maze and Cat must decide if they can rebuild their friendship, and Maze discovers her long-held attraction to Walker hasn’t faded with the years but has only grown stronger.

Review

I haven't read the previous books in the series but this works perfectly as standalone. I'd say this story fall between romance and women's fiction - there is a central love story and a HEA but also a lot of time and focus is dedicated to the other characters (found family of the MCs).

I enjoyed the world Jill Shalvis, one were friendships and family matter, where people try to do their best despite the circumstances, where they make mistakes and take wrong turn along the way but are ultimately led by kindness. We get usual dose of pets and babies, mostly for comic relief without overshadowing the romance.

On the negative side, I felt too much of the conflict was based on misunderstanding. I realise why the Maze ad Walker couldn't discuss things openly from the start. The trauma of their childhood is a serious one that has marked them and it was not easy for them to overcome their fears and to see themselves as worthy of love.

There were some unexpected plot twists which I liked even though the story more or less went in the direction I expected it to go from the start. It's this familiarity, knowing what is coming, that makes these books comfort reads for me.

I found this to be a comforting, hopeful story, making me buy the romance between the MCs, leaving me convinced they are right for each other and are good for each other and can make each other happy. It's this hopefulness, the promise of a better future together, that's the reason I read romance.

Review

Jill Shalvis is my favourite author when it comes to sweet and sexy small town romances. And her Holiday stories always leave me at a happy place. This one was no different.

I still need to read the first book this new series but starting with the second one was no mistake either. It was so much fun and full of all the warm feeling and cosiness and friendship and the good of humanity in general that I associate with Christmas time. What made me really happy about this story that it did use the Christmas theme (strongly and with a touch of humour) without overdoing it. We don't get the perfect happy biological family but rather the right circle of friends and loved one who stick for one another through bad times and good ones and make the Holidays really special.

The heroine, Willa, was just adorable. Quirky and insecure, dealing with the consequences of a rough childhood by caring for everybody (humans and animals alike), going out of her way to help others, to bring joy and happiness in their lives.

The hero, Keane, like all Ms Shalvis' heroes, was close to perfect. He did have to make up for past mistakes but his present behaviour more than compensated for his carelessness in the past. He is working man and despite having a family unlike Willa. he was just as lonely as her.

I loved the character growth both of them had to go through in the story. There was a sort of reversal of roles which I found refreshing. She started as someone looking for love and long-term commitment while he was convinced he was no relationship material. Somehow along the road she ended up with doubts about her ability to be with someone for the long haul (she did think she wasn't good enough and that made me so sad) and he developed the idea that building a home with her and spending his life here with her was the right thing for him.

The chemistry between Willa and Keane was great and the love scenes - smoking hot. There was the usual circle of great friends (hers in this case) and their interactions both playful and concerned - were nicely done and fun to read.

There will more books in the series coming soon - a novella, One Snowy Night by the end of 2016 and a full-length novel, Accidentally on Purpose, early 2017 and I can't wait to read them both.

Excerpt

“You want to come upstairs, Willa?”

What she wanted was to put her hands back on his chest now that she knew it was as hard as it looked. Instead she gripped either side of her seat with white knuckles. “Of course not.”
“I think you do. I think you want something else too.”
“What I want,” she said as coolly as she could, “is dinner as promised.”
“Liar,” he chided softly.
“Well that’s just rude, calling your date a liar.”
“So it is a date.” His tone was very male and very smug. It should’ve pissed her off but instead it did something hot and erotic to her insides.
Clearly knowing it, he smiled at her and then dragged his teeth over his lower lip as he contemplated her.
Gah. She wanted to do that. And she wanted to do more too. She wanted him shockingly badly and suddenly she couldn’t remember why she shouldn’t. She tried to access her thought processes on the subject but her brain hiccupped and froze. Which surely was the only reason she let go of the death grip on her seat, slid her fingers into his hair, and . . . brushed her mouth over his.
He didn’t move, not a single muscle, but when she pulled back, his eyes had gone dark as night, piercing her with their intensity.
“Don’t read that the wrong way,” she whispered.
“Is there a wrong way to take it when a beautiful woman kisses you?”

Synopsis

SOMETIMES YOU CAN GO HOME AGAIN…

After an overseas mission goes wrong, Army Special Forces officer Jacob Kincaid knows where he must go to make things right: back home to the tiny town of Cedar Ridge, Colorado. All he needs to scrub away his painful past is fresh mountain air, a lakeside cabin, and quiet solitude. But what he discovers is a gorgeous woman living on a boat at his dock.

Sophie Marren has nowhere else to go. She’s broke, intermittently seasick, and fighting a serious attraction to the brooding, dishy, I’m-too-sexy-for-myself guy who’s now claiming her dock. Something about Jacob’s dark intensity makes her want to tease—and tempt—him beyond measure. Neither one wants to give any ground . . . until they realize the only true home they have is with each other.

Review

I was curious to read Jacob's story from the start of this series but things got even more exciting in the previous book, which was about his twin brother. And I also have a big soft spot for war heroes, so I couldn't wait to meet Jacob.

And he turned to be all I expected from him and then some more. I loved everything about his character, I understood his frustration and worries and really appreciated his efforts to return to his family and to ask for their forgiveness and acceptance the only way he knew how.

His unexpected romantic affair was really sweet and very emotional at the same time. It took both Jacob and Sophie by surprise and neither of them it as anything long-term until it was too late for either of them to back away.

I liked Sophie, her determination and decisiveness to go forward with her life on her own coupled with her occasional clumsiness and total obliviousness, were mostly adorable. AT times they felt too much - she seemed immature and childish to me, especially in her anger towards her ex and his flings. I understand and sympathize with her anger and hurt but her tricks and vengeance felt petty and really beneath her.

A thing a like about Jill Shalvis' series in general is the sense of friendship and brotherhood/sisterhood she creates among the characters. I love their banter, the friendly teasing and ultimately their loyalty to one another and the sense that your family/close friends always have your back and accept you as you are. I expected this to have a more central role here, especially with Jacob and Hud being twins but I found it missing.

We saw a lot of the brothers and their sister but for me it lacked the familiar warm feeling of community, their partners made just a few brief appearances. I wished we saw more of all of the characters coming together. Kenna's love life also caught me by surprise and it felt a bit rushed and out of place.

Overall, this story is a nice addition to the series, with a hero whom I greatly enjoyed and heroine who was cute but also a bit annoying. The romance and chemistry between Jacob and Sophie were strong and heart-warming.

And her infectious joy touches something deep within him that he's been missing far too long. Now he'll just have to convince Bailey to take a chance on her biggest adventure yet . . . something rare and all kinds of wonderful.

Review

I needed a comfort read and as usual, Jill Shalvis' romances came to the rescue. My Kind of Wonderful (in the second book in her latest series, Cedar Ridge, set in a mountain ski resort, a setting the works great for me.

This story had so many of may favourite tropes in romance - a heroine who is fragile on the outside but all tough and determined on the inside, a hero who is protective and caring, loving fiercely his family and friends but pretty clueless when it comes to his personal life.

The story touches of serious issues (serious illness), family obligations and support, moving one, accepting the past with your mistakes and really, really looking to the future.

Bailey was a great heroine, a woman trying to find her place because up to now she has been forced to look on life from the sides and make no plans for the future. She has a list of things to do but then life happens and she has to quickly adapt her list. I love how fierce and determined she was. The way she went about being honest about her feelings for Hud, not playing games, acting coy or clingy was touching and real.

Hudson was a complex character on his own. He carried so much guilt and burden on his shoulders, yet he always took time to help the other, to be there for his family and friends. Life had thought him not the rely on anyone, even the family he so dearly loved. It took him quite a while to accept the change of plans life threw at them. He did not think there was a place for a woman in his life (and heart) but Bailey surprised him and took residence in his world without really asking.

The romance was hot and tender at the same time. It started as one time thing which soon became a few more times till the forever kind of relationship. The road to Bailey and Hud's HEA was not that easy though. The constant going back and forth, especially on the part of Hud, got tiresome and annoying towards the end. I wanted him to realise what he had and what he needed in life so much sooner but alas, he just needing some more prodding and good natured ribbing by his siblings to get the picture.

I absolutely love the family dynamics Ms Shalvis builds in her stories - there so much fun and love and warmth and caring about each other - which makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Overall, after loving the first book in the Cedar Ridge series, Second Chance Summer (review), I really enjoyed this one too. It hit all the right buttons for me and left me happy with a smile on my face. A recommended read for Ms Shalvis' fans and any other lovers of contemporary romance.

Review

This was the perfect comfort read for me - sweet and sexy. I generally enjoy Ms Shalvis romances and the Animal Magnetism series is one of my favourites.

The story follows a familiar route for Ms Shalvis - an alpha hero who is hiding a tender heart falls (against his will and his better judgement) for a lovable, strong heroine who is good at her profession but unlucky in her love life.

Some these stories work better for me, some have minor things that annoy me and make them not so perfect. This one falls in the first category.

I liked both Zoe and Parker, enjoyed their roommates romance and the crime plotline was intriguing enough without overshadowing the love story. I enjoyed the easy flow of the story, the lack of artificial drama or angst. The concerns and misgiving both Zoe and Parker had when it came to them being together rang true and believable. I understood Zoe's desire to move on with her life but I could also relate to her fears. She took the temporary nature of their arrangement, yet she couldn't help want more and when the time came, she was open and upfront about it.

Parker is obsessed with his job and falling for Zoe came as a total surprise for me. His confusion about what to do felt natural to me. He made some bad decisions but in the end he found the right path ahead. He had to make big decisions about his life and his future and this is never an easy thing to do.

Two elements of this story stand out in particular for me - Zoe is a pilot, she takes Parker as a client on different assignments and I really, really appreciate her being strong and independent and professional. I loved that she had this job that is still considered mostly suited for men, yet no one made a fuss about it. At the same time she was still vulnerable and feminine - couldn't bake and fix various repairs around the house despite being able to take care of her plane. On the other hand, Parker had this police/investigator job and he was all manly and strong and physically fit, yet he was totally adorable with the two baby kittens and he was most patient and considerate with his sister who had Dawn syndrome.

Both had the added pressure of complex family situations. Their parents and sibling made a create supporting cast in the story - supportive and funny and frustrating. The family dynamics are one the elements in Ms Shalvis' books that I particularly enjoy. They maybe somewhat idealised (brothers and sisters bickering but mostly being supporting and loving) but work well within the stories.

Fans of Jill Shalvis won't be disappointed with Zoe and Parker story.

What she needs more than anything are long hikes, slow dances, and sizzling kisses. But that can only happen if he can get her to give Cedar Ridge-and this bad boy-a second chance.

Review

Jill Shalvis is an autobuy author for me and I was excited to read Second Chance Summer which is her first book in a new series, Cedar Ridge.

Like most of her books, this one left me warm and fuzzy inside, a sweet story of second chance at love for two very lovable characters.

Having read Ms Shalvis somewhat extensively by now, I notice some similarities in her books and some of them work for me, others - not so much. this time things mostly worked well for me. The heroine, is very typical for Ms Shalvis, a young woman at a crosspoint in her life, a little lost. she is forced to return to her small hometown years after escaping it after a terrible tragedy. and she comes face to face with her first (only) love. Both feel hurt by the past and are unwilling to try a relationship but can't stay away from each other and with a little (lot) help from friends and family they find the way to be together.

I very much enjoyed the slow built of the romance, the typical good-natured fun and brother?familial relationships. It's one of the things I like so much in Ms Shalvis' books - she creates this warm, caring families/friends who keep driving each other crazy, yet who stand by one another 100%. I love both the humour and the sense of loyalty, of community, of people caring for the others.

Sometimes the drama and the obstacles before the couple getting together feel too artificial and contrived. There was a bit of this here too - Aiden's reaction to a particular situation was so over the top that it appeared ridiculous. It's not a major drawback, just a little thing that I find annoying. It seemed just like plot device to create tension and conflict and not a real, natural element of the story.

Protective, sexy, caring and loyal. Lily doesn't want to acknowledge she needs help, support, someone to lean onto when the going gets tough. they were a perfect match. I like how Ms Shalvis brings her characters together but they manage to keep their individuality, there are no major sacrifices to be together, no one changes the other to their liking.

Excerpt

“How did you fall?” he asked.
“Backward. Fast,” she quipped, not about to admit she’d been startled by a bunny. A baby bunny.
“Smartass.” He began to check her over. As in he put his hands all over her and ran them over her body. “You’re bleeding,” he said.
“I’ll buy you new sheets.”
“Shut up.” He frowned at her wrist and found another problem at her ankle, all while she attempted to keep her T-shirt covering as much as of her as possible. Then he pointed to her shirt. “Lose it.”
“Bite me.”
“Later,” he said. “I want to see your ribs.”
“How about my foot up your ass?”
He met her gaze, his own stubborn and unbending. “Me or a doctor, Lily.”
He’d do it too, she had no doubt. He’d drag her kicking and screaming out of here if need be. So she sighed and very carefully lifted the T-shirt to just beneath her breasts.
“See? I’m fine—”
She broke off, the air backing up in her lungs when he ran his hands very lightly over her ribcage, stopping when she managed to suck in a breath.
“Bruised, not broken I don’t think,” he said, his voice quiet and calm and clinically dispassionate, in direct opposition to his eyes. “Turn over.”
She bit out a harsh laugh. “Yeah, that’s going to happen nev—”
He rolled her over and pinned her there with a hand low on her back.
She sputtered and fought him, but then went utterly still when he ran his fingers up the back of one thigh, scooping the edge of her boy cut panties up a cheek.
“Also bruised,” he said.
“That’s where I landed. No worries, I’m padded nicely.”
“Nicely is right,” he said, and he removed his hands from her.
She leapt off the bed, tugged down her shirt, and had to tighten her lips not to whimper at the fast movement. “Okay, thanks. Be sure to lock the door on your way—”
“Did you hit your head or lose consciousness at any time?”
“No!” She didn’t want to need his help, wanted to lick her wounds in private rather than get turned on by his gentle touch. But she was stupid light-headed from getting up too fast and knew she wasn’t in the greatest shape.
And must as she didn’t want to like it, she did like how he always seemed to be there for her, even if her brain kept telling her heart she didn’t want him to be.
He still wasn’t leaving. “Tell me what really happened.”
“I loaded up some wood and was making my way up the stairs when”—she broke off and grimaced —“something popped out of the wood. I nearly had heart failure and fell down the stairs. The end.”
He never took his eyes off of her. “What popped out at you?”
“A spider,” she said, because hey, that could’ve totally happened. Just because she’d freaked out over the baby bunny didn’t mean that there wasn’t also a spider. Maybe she’d been so busy falling down the stairs she just hadn’t seen the spider.
“A spider made you fall down the stairs?” he asked in disbelief.
“A big one.” She lifted her hands so that they were about a foot apart.
His lips twitched.
Her hands spread apart even wider. “It might have been a mutant spider.”
“Or a baby bunny,” he said.
She stared at him while he grinned wide.
“You knew the whole time,” she accused.
“Yep. Lenny told me.”
“Well isn’t that just like a man,” she said in disgust.
Aidan tipped his head back and laughed out loud.
“Fine. Whatever,” she said. “I’m taking a shower. Alone.”
“Make it lukewarm, not hot,” he said. “I’m going to the truck for my first aid kit.”
“Aidan, I’m so not in the mood to play doctor.”
“Good,” he said. “I’ll play doctor and you play the nice, sweet, passive patient.”

The Animal Attraction series are one of my favourite of hers and the blurb for this latest installment really drew me in. I had very high expectations of this story and loved some bits of it but there are a few things that threw me off and it ended a nice, but a bit annoying 3-star read for me.

I admire strong characters, overcoming physical and emotional trauma and naturally, I loved Darcy. Her fears felt real, her courage and openness were much appreciated. Her attraction to AJ and her sense of rejection were well presented and this made them believable. She was a real human being - a little reckless, a lot of spunky and sassy, yet vulnerable, tender, caring. She knew had made mistakes and will probably make more in the future, she had issues with her body image after her accident.

AJ, on the other hand, came off a bit as super human - all cool, calm and collected, a responsible adult who had his life figured out. At least that's how Darcy saw him and that's how he acted most of the story. His reluctance to risk his heart with Darcy did piss me off. I wanted him to man up and go for what he wanted, consequences be damned.

There were some heartbreaking descriptions of Darcy's daily physical struggles and her difficult road to recovery but I was disappointed how it all was glossed over in the love scenes. There was not a hint of physical discomfort, pain, strain, or anything like that, while we kept seeing this things happening  in her daily activities all the time.

I liked the glimpses of Dacry's brother and sister, AJ's dad, Xander and Tyler plotlines, and the "other" woman from the gym. They did create the warm small-town, close-knit family and friends atmosphere I enjoy in Ms Shalvis' novels. What I didn't like were Trent and his wife - they seemed really cheesy to me and out of place in the story.

I also got annoyed with the constant miscommunication between Darcy and AJ, and the eavesdropping scene is a trope in romance I absolutely hate. Acting out and not really discussing things happened one too many times and felt forced.

On the good side, I loved the animal theme here. I'm not a big fan of animals in general, to be honest, I'm scared of them and prefer watching from afar rather than interacting directly. Still, I love how Ms Shalvis' pours her own love of animals in her stories. It's touching and never overly sentimental.

Fans of Jill Shalvis will enjoy this novel, though it's not my favourite in the series.

Mini Review

This is the final book in the Lucky Harbor series and it offered a cute romance thought it didn't end up as one of my favourites in the series.

I liked the hero and  heroine  (Tanner and Callie) a lot both when the were together and separately as characters. I wanted to see more of them but was often distracted by Lucille's story. The old Lucky Harbor's busybody has been a great supporting character through out this series but she took too much center stage here. We already know what to expect of her and reading about her antics over and over again felt repetitive.

Callie was cute, a bit nerdy and insecure which her background made perfectly understandable and acceptable, yet she often acted childish and immature. She seemed like the teenager who had a crush on Tanner and not like an independent young woman falling for a grown up man.

Tanner was an interesting character and I really wanted to see more of him. I have a soft spot for single dads in fiction who are struggling with the task of bringing up a child. I very appreciated Tanner's efforts to be a good dad to his teenager son and I wish their issues were presented with more depth and development.

Troy, Tanner's son was a wonderful brooding teenager and I felt he fitted very well into the story and was both endearing and realistic.

As usual, we get glimpses of characters from the previous books in the series and as always, it gave me a nice, heart warming feeling.

The story ends with the expected HEA for Callie and Tanner and unlike most of the other books which end with the proposal, here we get to see a wedding - a crazy, sweet beach weeding and it was the perfect end to this much loved series.

Now, I'm ready for some new series by Ms. Shalvis!

Synopsis

For Olivia Bentley, Lucky Harbor is more than the town where she runs her new vintage shop. It's the place where folks are friendly to strangers-and nobody knows her real name. Olivia does a good job of keeping her past buried, not getting too cozy with anyone . . . until she sees a man drowning. Suddenly she's rushing into the surf, getting up close and personal with the hottest guy she's ever laid hands on.

Charter boat captain Cole Donovan has no problem with a gorgeous woman throwing her arms around his neck in an effort to "save" him. In fact, he'd like to spend a lot more time skin-to-skin with Olivia. He's just not expecting that real trouble is about to come her way. Will it bring her deeper into Cole's heart, or will it be the end of Olivia's days in little Lucky Harbor?

Review
4 stars

This is book 10 in our favourite Lucky Harbor series and it's the second book in the final set of three (here we have three best friends finding and winning over their women). Cole's story was more on the cute, fluffy and funny side than some of the other stories in this series and I enjoyed it a lot.

Cole can be summarized in one word - a sweetheart. Make no mistake, he is as much an Alpha male as all Shalvis heroes are, yet he was often clueless, oblivious to the obvious and this made him cute and adorable. His penchant for honesty and Olivia keeping a big secret didn't go well, but ultimately it served them both to break some emotional walls and trust love again.

While, I'm not a particular fan of stories of child stars, I liked Olivia a lot. She was trying to make herself anew and it appeared she was pretty successful. This only worked for her while she was keeping everyone at a distance but once she allowed Cole deeper into her life, she had to face reality and her past.

As it usually happens, when you keep a big secrets, it gets revealed at the worst possible moment. Cole and Olivia had to work hard to make things right between relying on honesty and taking the risk to love someone.

It is mostly a cute, funny, light-hearted romance with some underlining serious issues. Olivia is running away from her past and Cole is trying to come to terms with a deep betrayal of trust. They come together in a series of comic incidents which made the whole story both romantic and funny.

With some comic moments, some great chemistry and a few loyal and meddling friends the couple reached its HEA.

This is cute romance with easily lovable characters which fans of the Lucky Harbor series will love. The final book in the series, One in a Million, telling Tanner's story, is coming out on

Or do Sam and little Lucky Harbor have a chance to win Becca's heart?

Review

This is the first book in the final set of three in Ms Shalvis' Lucky Harbor series. I generally love her romances, they are like comfort food for me - familiar and sweet, easy to read and they generally leave me with a happy smile on my face. Naturally, some of them work better for me than others and this  one definitely falls in the first category - I really, really enjoyed Sam and Becca's story.

Sam was the silent, brooding type, someone reliable and with a heart too big. Becca was the new girl in town, running away from something, trying to start her life a new. I loved the romance between them and despite some obstacles, they didn't had any major dramas to deal with.

Becca underwent real growth and development through her relationship with Sam and with the other inhabitants of Lucky Harbor. She became her own person and finally found happiness in the small town community which quickly turned from a pit-stop to a final destination.

Sam seemed more static, set in his ways and views of the world. She prompted him to be more outspoken about his feeling but he was the good guy with the big heart from the start. He was just cautious with his expressing his affections into words because life had taught him to be this way.

I liked that both Becca and Sam were in their 30s, they had made their fair share of mistakes and wrong decisions and had learned from them. They had some issues to deal with and some insecurities to overcome but overall they didn't act immature or childish which I highly appreciate.

As usual, Lucky Hrobor was a fun place to be, especially for a newcomer from a big city. It was nice seeing some of the previous couples in this series and how they helped both Becca and Sam to feel welcome and at home there.

There were some funny times, some sexy times, some family times and the story was low on angst and drama, so I'd say it is a great addition to the series.

It's a recommended read for the fans of the series and for all lovers of sweet, sexy small-town romance.

Synopsis

Veterinary intern Emily can’t believe she wound up in the small town of Sunshine, Idaho, instead of the Los Angeles clinic she had always imagined. Now she has to put her plans to move to L.A. on hold for a whole year while she fulfills the obligation of her vet school scholarship.

Then Wyatt, her gorgeous one-night stand from a Reno vet conference, introduces himself as her new boss. And Emily is just as drawn to his seductive looks and quiet strength as she was on that very steamy night. She soon learns that Wyatt isn’t just a laid-back doctor, but a delicious alpha male tempting her away from her carefully laid-out plans...

Review

It's another sweet and sexy romance by Jill shalvis in her Animal Magnetism series about the sexy vets in Bell Haven. This time we have two vets trying to stay away from each other and failing.

I liked the story a lot. Emily was easy to relate to. She is city girl with a plan and her plan doesn't include 1-year internship in Idaho, further more under the supervision of her one and only one-night stand, Dr. Wyatt Stone.

She is a well developed, believable character and all her preoccupations and fears of staring a relationship with someone seem very real. She carried the burden of her background and coming from a family who struggled financially all the time, she wants more for herself and works hard to get it.

Wyatt was her opposite in many respect. His comes from riches but his parents care more about saving the world than about the well-being of their children. He wanted to settle down, to take roots in Sunshine, Idaho and he wanted to do it with Emily. Yet having grown up deprived of any choice as to his, as an adult he believes in giving the other person freedom to do as they please. He never insists, demands, to the point of coming off as disinterested. It took some good-natured nudging from his sisters and friends for him to actually fight for his love.

The affair between Emily and Wyatt as passionate and steamy from the start, yet they both guarded their hearts. Initially, Emily tried to keep things casual and didn't want to deepen them. Then she wanted him to fight for her, to aks her to stay. She felt insecure because he was too closed off about his feelings, trying to respect her wishes.

I loved the scene in the bar at the end with Wyatt writing Emily a message on a napkin. It was just hilarious.

We have the usual colourful secondary characters complementing the main couple - his 2 sisters and her 1 sister and I enjoyed the interactions between them. We also see some of couples from the previous books but I expected a closer connection between Wyatt and rest of the guys in Belle Haven. He felt a bit on the outside.

Overall, it's a good addition to the series, though my most favourite. I can recommend this book to all fans of Ms Shalvis' writing and to anyone in the mood for a quick  the light sexy romance.

He leaned in. “And what?” he asked, voice dangerously low.

“And…” Stymied at her ridiculous and constant reaction to him, Aubrey put her hands to his chest to give him another shove, but somehow got her wires crossed and she fisted his shirt instead.

“Dare me,” he said softly.

Oh, how she hated how well he knew her. “I dare you to kiss me,” she whispered, and then to make sure he did, she put her mouth on his first…

My review

This is book 9 in the Lucky Harbour series and it completes the latest set of three connected stories. So far, I have read only the first three books and enjoyed them. I am a fan of Ms Shalvis' work and I have read some of her other series. as well, so I had some high expectations of this book.

Though I generally liked the story of Ben and Aubrey, it did not end up my favourites list. It's a nice small-town romance, written in the engaging style of Ms Shalvis, but there were too many small things that bothered me and prevented me from rating it higher than 3 stars.

I will start with the good things I liked in this story. I loved the heroine, Aubrey. She was  a strong and kind and determined character. I usually fall for the hero in the romances I read and did like Ben but not as much I as hoped.

Aubrey was a troubled teen, she has a bad reputation but she actually is a good person and tries hard to make amends for her mistakes. She has grown up and sees thing in perspective. I admired her determination to change, to be a better person. What I found particularly remarkable was that she wanted to change for her own sake, she didn't need a guy to help her or show her path to being a better, kinder, happier person. She had figured her mistakes on her own and was working on fixing them just for the her own sake of being and not to impress anyone.

Then, Ben came along. He was on her list of people she had wronged but he was also her high-school crush. Ben was a complex character. I liked a lot of things about him - his concern and care of the 5-year old twin sisters from the foster home, his loyalty to hi friends, Jack and Luke, his affection for his aunt Dee. My problem was his attitude towards Aubrey. He grew to care about her, saw her for who she trully was, yet he kept running away from her and from his feelings for her. He was alpha man in bed but when it came to facing her feelings for him, he acted like a coward. He couldn't forgive her mistake towards him and used this to break things between them.

Aubrey was strong enough to open herself to him and admit her true feelings, admit her mistake and ask for forgiveness and he turned her away. This made me really angry and rather disappointed with him. It was only through the outside intervention that he saw his mistake in letting Aubrey go.

A major drawback of the story for me was the way the issue with Ben's dead wife was presented. Initially, Hannah was presented as completely opposite to Aubrey - kind, pure, almost perfect. As the story progressed, though, her reputation got tarnished and some unpleasant secrets were revealed. I felt it was done only in order to justify Ben's moving on and his acceptance of his feelings for Aubrey. In my opinion, it was not necessary to make Hannah look bad. It is OK for Ben to move on after her death and to fall for someone completely different from her. People grow and change...

My other major complaint was the rushed ending - from "I don't want a relationship" to "Marry me" - it was too abrupt. Ben and Aubrey getting together would have been enough.

Next book will be about Sam, a friend of Ben's and we saw very little of him in this, so he is very much an enigma and I am looking forward to reading his story. It's in His Kiss will be released in August 2014.
