Review

This is book 5 in On Dublin Street series. I’ve read all the books, except book 2, and I’d recommend that you read them in order, though they can be appreciated as standalones as well.

I was rather disappointed with Hannah and Marco's story in the Before Jamaica lane this made anxious about Cole’s story. I liked it better but still it’s not one of my favourites in the series.

This was a very sweet, NA romance between a supposedly bad boy hero and a heroine who has sworn off of dangerous men.

Cole, whom we met first as a kid in the beginning of the series has grown up to be a fine young man. He is a famous tattoo artist, rough looking, covered in tattooes himself, yet his appearance is totally misleading. He hides a heart of gold and he was the perfect gentleman with everybody. I felt his goodness a bit overdone, too perfect made him bland and far too unrealistic. Still, he was great with his friends and family, and that made him pretty adorable and irresistible.

My main issue in the story was Shannon. She was just shallow and judgemental, quick to dismiss Cole as someone unworthy of her time/attention just because of his looks. Even when they overcame their initial misunderstanding, she kept making wrong decisions and some stupid choices which hurt the people who loved her. She did try to make up for her wrongdoings, yet I wasn’t conviced she deserved Cole.

We see a lot of the previous couples, all with children now. Unlike in the previous novel, here their presence was not overwhelming, but warm and nice. There was the usual craziness surrounding them, together with some touching family moments.

Overall, it was a nice installment in the series, but there was too much artificial drama and angst. All the happy times and the hot chemistry between Cole and Shannon led to just a 3.5 star rating for me.

We meet Shannon’s brother, Logan,  in this story and he will be the hero in the next instalment of the series. The blurb for his story is really intriguing and I can’t wait to read it next year.

Why am I waiting for this? I really enjoy this contemporary romance series and I've read all the books but one. I had some issues with the last one, Fall From India Place, but Cole (the hero in this one) made a nice impression on me and I'm curious about his story. I like Ms Young's writing style and hope this book will ne another winner for me.

Review

This is book 4 in the On Dublin Street series. I've read all the previous books but one, Down London Road and they have been hit or miss for me. I loved On Dublin Street (Braden and Joss) and Before Jamaica Lane (Nate and Olivia) and Until Fountain Bridge (the short novella on Ellie and Adam) but Castle Hill (the follow-up novella on Joss and Braden) didn't work for me at all. This one falls in the middle. I liked some of it, some of it annoyed me but overall an OK read.

The story of Hannah and Marco started in Before Jamaica Lane when they were still teenagers and now it continues 6 years later after Marco left Hannah absolutely shattered.

In the beginning we are introduced to Hannah's personal and professional life, she is doing a teaching internship and also leading a volunteer literacy course for adults. I liked all the details we got about her life. I also very much enjoyed her interactions with all the rest of her family. All this served to build her character at present and despite her seemingly happy life we got a sense that there were some secrets in her past she kept buried deeply.

When Marco re-enters her life, Hannah is completely thrown off her feet. He goes after her relentlessly trying to make up for all the pain he had caused her. This is where things started to lose some of their initial appeal for me.

Marco and Hannah started a passionate affair but they kept too many secrets that were bound to come to light and cause them some real problems. I found their relationship full of drama. Marco kept springing surprises on her and she kept overreacting, then it was her turn to make life-shattering revelations about her past and for him to back off totally confused. Hannah was really stuck in the past and couldn't move past the pain she suffered and the fears that it may happen again. Marco's decision to keep one particular secret from her was not very smart and it naturally led to a lot of confusion, pain and some more drama.

I enjoyed seeing more of the couples from the previous books, but at some point the multitude of characters - family children, friends, colleagues, students - it all became too much and I had trouble keeping tabs on who is who. I definitely feel some characters didn't add much to the story and could have been left out of it.

It was not a easy romance between Hannah and Marco, their past constantly catching up with them, they had to fight hard to be together. I felt he was more determined to make things work between them, while . Hannah gave up too easily. I liked Marco quite a bit, felt connected to him and sympathized with his struggles to rectify his mistakes and to win Hannah's love again. She, on the other hand, annoyed me most of the time, often came off as immature and self-centered, and generally prevented me from enjoying this story as much as I expected to.

There is a plot twist (development) towards the end that was a total surprise for me and not a nice one. It involves one of Hannah's students and I think it was too much, there was no need to go to such extremes to make Hannah change her mind. It left me sad and disappointed.

Overall I liked the this story but there far too many little things that bothered me and prevented me from giving it more than 3 stars. Ms Young has announced that there will  be another book in this series, coming in 2015 and it will be about Cole, Jo's younger brother and Hannah's best friend (we do see a lot f him in this book and I can honestly say I'm intrigued about his story).

My teaser this week comes from Fall from India Place (On Dublin Street #4) by Samantha Young. I just finished it and it was a nice romance but I expected more from it.

I was costing along, almost a little smug not only in my present contentment, but also in the fact that I'd beaten my issues with the past. Little did I know that the past doesn't take too kindly to smugness, to disinterest. The past can be spiteful. It can creep up on the present to taunt it with the memories and all the old hurts.

Ellie Carmichael had a crush on Adam Sutherland, her brother, Braden’s, best friend, for years, and although Adam treated her with proprietary concern he made it clear he thought of her only as a little sister.

Over the years, as Ellie’s crush develops into love, her romantic idealism makes it difficult for her to move on. To make matters worse, as she’s gotten older, Adam’s attitude has changed toward her. His affection for her is now joined by attraction, but his loyalty to Braden, and his fear of losing the only family he has, stops him from claiming Ellie the way she wishes he would.

But one night his attraction is put to the test, and as much as Adam would like things to remain the same everything changes between them in a simple brush of the lips.

Soon lust, love, jealousy and heartbreak combine to force change upon their relationship… and Adam discovers the hard way that life is too damn short to spend it on regret.

My review

This is a short novella on Ellie and Adam which unlike Joss and Braden's I really loved. It offered the same emotionally charged writing that Ms Young won me over in On Dublin Street. It can be read at any order in the series, but you must On Dublin Street before it.

I am not a big fan of novella since due to their short length many things are left out - the characters are not fully developed, or major events are just skimmed through. This one was different, since we already knew the characters rather well and some of the major events related to them were already covered in depth in On Dublin Street. Novella was the perfect format to tell the story of Ellie and Adam's love.

I especially liked the way their story is told in retrospect though Ellie's diary entries. The story focuses on main events in their relationship and it's a long one starting back in Ellie's childhood. The going back and forth between then and now worked well for me. It is touching, emotional story of love and regret, some bad decisions and missed chances and ultimately finding happiness together.

We got glimpses of Ellie and Adam's story in the first book but this novella showed us the road with all its wrong and right turns it took Ellie and Adam to finally find each other. There were no surprises here, no major drama or unexpected plot twist. It was just a great love story of the meant-to-be kind of type.

It was short and sweet, feel-good love story. The relationship between the characters was very romantic like Ellie herself and very hot like Adam.

This is my final review of this series so far.You can also check my opinions of Castle Hill and Before Jamaica Lane. Now, I will be anxiously looking forward to Ms Young's next book in the series, telling Hannah and Marco's story.

One simple lesson in seduction between two friends can turn into so much more…

Despite her outgoing demeanor, Olivia is painfully insecure around the opposite sex—usually, she can’t get up the nerve to approach guys she’s interested in. But moving to Edinburgh has given her a new start, and, after she develops a crush on a sexy postgrad, she decides it’s time to push past her fears and go after what she wants.

Nate Sawyer is a gorgeous player who never commits, but to his close friends, he’s as loyal as they come. So when Olivia turns to him with her relationship woes, he offers to instruct her in the art of flirting and to help her become more sexually confident.

The friendly education in seduction soon grows into an intense and hot romance. But then Nate’s past and commitment issues rear their ugly heads, and Olivia is left broken-hearted. When Nate realizes he’s made the biggest mistake of his life, he will have to work harder than he ever has before to entice his best friend into falling back in love with him—or he may lose her forever

My Review

This is the third book in On Dublin Street series. I haven't read the second one, Down London Road, yet, where Olivia and Nate (the main characters in this one) were first introduced but that wasn't a problem since their previous story was nicely recapped and I was able to fully enjoy this latest installment in the series.

The trope of a male best friend giving his female best friend lessons in seduction to boost her confidence so she can date other guys leading to them falling for one another is not a favourite of mine but I think it worked really well here.

Olivia was a great character - she was a shy and proper librarian, self-proclaimed geek, with a great sense of humour and very caring, open-hearted nature, yet she lacked confidence and her lack of experience with men made her feel self-conscious. She has been attracted to Nate from the beginning but they have limited their relationship to being just (great) friends.

Nate was also more than likable - he was smart, funny and sexy, a bit of player and a loyal friend.

When their lessons in seduction start both of them were reluctant to admit that it is more than that. They had their personal issues to overcome. Their love didn't come out of the blue, it grew naturally out of their friendship. Moving on to friends with benefits led them to open up to each other and to share their secrets and dreams. There were the inevitable ups and downs, saying and doing the wrong thing on both sides but in the end they were able to move on from their pasts and embrace a future together.

The ending it predictable but very sweet. If you have read any of my other reviews you already know how much I appreciate a good epilogue to any story and I did like the epilogue very much. It encompassed the whole book beautifully - it was sweet and funny and tender and sexy, just as the whole love story of Nate and Olivia was.

I liked the presence the rest the characters, we catch up on things between Joss and Braden, Jo and Cam, Ellie and Adam. I was disappointed with Castle Hill, the novella on Joss and Braden (my review) and I think that this books presented the events in their lives much better than the said novella. They felt more consistent with the characters as we know them from On Dublin Street.

At times the supporting characters (friends relatives, parents) were too much to handle. They gave richness to the story and set the stage for upcoming books (Hannah and Marco's story is up next) but their presence was overwhelming, overshadowing the main story.

Overall, this book offered some witty banter with Scottish accent :), some internal struggle, deep thoughts on love and trust, making it quite an enjoyable read. There were some hot, sexy times presented beautifully, as expected from Ms Young. Olivia was the perfect student and an overachiever in her lessons in seduction :)

After my disappointment with Castle Hill, this book quickly brought back my enjoyment of Ms Young's writing. I would go as far as to say that this is a must-read for the fans of her On Dublin Street series.

Braden Carmichael never imagined he’d fall as hard and as fast as he did for Jocelyn Butler. He also could not have anticipated how difficult it would be to convince her to give in to love. But now that he has her, he’s never letting go. He’s got it all planned—the passionate proposal, the dream wedding, the sexy Hawaiian honeymoon—even the perfect family they’ll start.

After trying to flee from her painful past, Joss is finally allowing herself to embrace the future. But when things start moving faster than she anticipated, she finds herself panicking over something Braden can’t understand. After everything they’ve been through, Joss is sure that their love can survive even her worst fears. But, this time, she may push Braden too far—and risk losing everything all over again…

My Review

Over the last week I have read a total of three books by Samantha Young - two novella and one novel. Now I am starting with reviews in the order I actually read the books. First is Caste Hill, which is a novella completing the story of Joss and Braden from On Dublin Street. In all honesty, I have to admit this is the one which I liked the least of the three.

I loved On Dublin Street and when I learned that Joss and Braden will get a novella, I was excited to read it. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me and left me disappointed.

The story felt rushed and it included far too many events for its short length - the proposal, the wedding, the honeymoon, the pregnancy. They were not developed in depth and their presentation was rather superficial. The story was told from Joss' POV, just like On Dublin Street, yet here her voice felt detached, emotionally distanced.

On the plus side, Joss and Braden were the same characters that I loved in Dublin street. Braden was sexy and cocky, somewhat possessive and impulsive but completely in love with Joss. Joss was mad about him as well, but she was still struggling with her fears and they tainted some of the sweetest moments in their life.

Despite the monumental events in the lives of the characters this novella cover, it lacked the thrill of the unexpected, nothing about it surprised me. The conflict towards the end of the book which put Joss and Braden's marriage under stress was weak and unrealistic. The whole problem was just one giant misunderstanding due to inability to communicate on both sides.

There were some funny times and some sexy times but they were not enough for me to enjoy the story more. In the end I awasleft wondering if this novella was necessary at all or a nice epilogue to On Dublin Street would have been a better option.

I have modified them slightly for my Teasers. It will not be two sentences from a random page but two, usually more, sentences from the pages I have read so far that have struck me as most interesting, original or that I just happen to like a lot.

My teaser this week comes from Before Jamaica Lane by Samantha Young. The book releases on Jan 7 and I just finished my ARC. It is a hot love story involving one insecure/shy librarian, one sinfully sexy movie/game reviewer and some lessons in seduction. I really liked it and would highly recommend it.

"You're that couple", he told me softly.
"What couple?" I snapped.
"That couple who are a couple even they're not being a couple."
